Federal aviation officials are investigating a serious incident at Nashville International Airport where two Southwest Airlines flights came dangerously close. The event unfolded on a Saturday afternoon when Southwest Flight 507 executed a precautionary go-around maneuver while approaching the airport, citing gusty winds.
During this go-around, air traffic control provided instructions that placed Flight 507 in the path of Southwest Flight 1152, which was taking off from a parallel runway. Fortunately, onboard traffic alerts sounded for both aircraft. The flight crews expertly responded to these alerts, ensuring the planes maintained safe separation and avoided a collision.
While no injuries were reported, the Federal Aviation Administration is reviewing the preliminary information. Southwest Airlines stated its pilots followed air traffic control instructions and traffic alerts. Flight 507 landed safely in Nashville, and Flight 1152 continued to Knoxville. Data suggests the aircraft may have approached within 500 feet of each other.
