25 Jan
Summary
- A massive fire broke out at a Hyderabad furniture showroom.
- Five individuals, including two children, are feared trapped in the cellar.
- Rescue operations face challenges due to intense heat and smoke.

A fierce fire erupted at Batcha's Furniture Castle on Nampally Station Road in Hyderabad on Saturday afternoon, with five individuals, including two children, feared trapped in the building's cellar. The blaze, which originated possibly in the cellar or ground floor, caused intense heat and thick smoke, hampering rescue efforts by several agencies including the Fire Services, SDRF, NDRF, and HYDRAA.
The five missing individuals were identified as siblings aged seven and eleven, two showroom employees, and a watchwoman who lived in the cellar with her sons. Flammable materials like foam and chemicals stored in the cellar are believed to have fueled the rapid spread of the fire. The showroom owner reportedly fled the scene, drawing criticism from local authorities.
Rescue operations, involving 16 fire tenders, a skylift, and a firefighting robot, continued late into the night. However, extreme heat and smoke made access to the cellar difficult for rescue personnel. The Telangana Human Rights Commission has registered a complaint regarding alleged lapses by government authorities in handling the incident.
