Nalasopara Fire: Two Dead, Residents Blame Faulty Safety Systems
15 Oct
Summary
- Two women died from suspected asphyxiation in a Nalasopara building fire.
- Around 25 residents were rescued, including a family on a ledge.
- Residents allege the building's firefighting system was non-operational.

A massive fire erupted in a 14-storey residential building in Nalasopara East on Tuesday night, resulting in two fatalities. The blaze, which broke out around 11:30 pm, took nearly six hours to extinguish. Two women, identified as Falguni Shah, 55, and Ashwini Parkar, 58, died from suspected asphyxiation, with no burn injuries reported.
Fire officials suspect a short circuit in an electrical meter box may have ignited the fire. During the incident, around 25 residents were rescued. In a tense rescue operation, a family of four was saved after they climbed onto a ledge to escape the flames and smoke.
Residents have accused the developer of negligence, alleging the building's firefighting system was non-operational despite the property being handed over in 2022. They claim sprinklers were not working and extinguishers had expired.
The Achole police have registered an accidental death report. An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the fire and examine potential negligence in building safety measures and maintenance of firefighting systems.
