On October 23, 2025, 56 families in Nagpur's Rama Nagar area near Narendra Nagar were forced to spend over 24 hours in darkness due to a power outage. The outage was caused by alleged shoddy work by a civic contractor appointed by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC).
The incident occurred after one of the power cables of the Saraswati Vihar Complex, which houses the 56 families, reportedly got damaged months after it was repaired by the contractor. Until late at night, residents were running from pillar to post to get their power restored, as the contractor's temporary fix failed.
Residents argued that since the NMC contractor had damaged the cables, it was his responsibility to ensure complete restoration rather than temporary, substandard repairs. They were planning to approach the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) again and even file a complaint against the contractor at the Ajni police station.
The power outage during the Diwali festivities caused significant inconvenience to the affected families, as their water storage had also run out. The incident highlights the ongoing issues with civic infrastructure maintenance in the city and the need for greater accountability from the authorities.
