Fresh Landslides Threaten Homes and Shops in Mussoorie
30 Aug
Summary
- Incessant rain caused landslides near Pani Wala Bend, disrupting traffic.
- Homes and a restaurant below Pahari Terrace were threatened and evacuated.
- Schools in Dehradun, Nainital, and Bageshwar closed due to orange alert.

Fresh landslides, triggered by incessant rain on Sunday, have caused disruptions on the Mussoorie-Dehradun road near Pani Wala Bend. The affected stretch, already weakened by previous flash floods in September of the previous year, saw traffic temporarily halted. Significant slope movement led to cracks developing on the road at km 21, where repairs were ongoing.
A major landslide below Pahari Terrace restaurant also endangered the establishment and five nearby residences. Approximately 15 people from these homes were safely evacuated after cracks appeared on a house terrace, indicating structural instability. This area has been particularly vulnerable throughout the current monsoon season.
Heavy rainfall also led to widespread waterlogging in various parts of Dehradun. Three rural roads within the district remained blocked due to the adverse weather conditions. In response to an orange alert issued for Monday, district administrations in Dehradun, Nainital, and Bageshwar ordered the closure of all schools and anganwadi centres as a precautionary measure.
