Watermelon Scare: Mumbai Family Deaths Under Probe
29 Apr
Summary
- A family of four died in Mumbai after reportedly eating watermelon.
- Officials stated pesticide residue usually does not cause such fatalities.
- Food and lab samples were collected to determine the exact cause of death.

A shocking incident in Mumbai's Pydhonie area has led to the deaths of a couple and their two daughters, reportedly after they ate watermelon. The family, identified as Abdullah Dokadia (40), his wife Naseem (35), and daughters Ayesha (16) and Zainab (13), were hospitalized on Sunday with severe symptoms and passed away hours apart.
While initial speculation pointed to the fruit, the Food Safety Commissioner of Maharashtra suggested that pesticide residue alone is unlikely to be the cause of such a tragedy. He noted that agricultural products are commonly treated with pesticides, and residue is expected, but fatalities from it are rare. The authorities have collected various food samples from the family's residence, including watermelon pieces, biryani, pulao, rice, and spices, for laboratory analysis. The results are expected with priority.
The police and FDA are investigating the source of the watermelon, as no vendor or purchase details could be immediately identified. The investigation is multifaceted, with forensic and postmortem reports being crucial alongside the FDA's food sample analysis. Officials emphasized that a combined assessment of all findings will be necessary to pinpoint the exact cause of death, ensuring all food safety standards are considered.
