Mumbai Water Crisis: Major Pipeline Leak Halts Supply
7 May
Summary
- A major leak in a 1,650mm water pipeline caused a shutdown.
- Repair work on Dr E Moses Road is underway on a 'war footing'.
- Several areas in South and Central Mumbai face water supply disruption.

A substantial leak in a 1,650mm diameter main water pipeline located on Dr E Moses Road has necessitated a large-scale water supply shutdown affecting significant portions of South and Central Mumbai. This critical infrastructure failure was identified late Wednesday night near Famous Studio in Mahalaxmi after a crack developed in the main line, causing considerable water loss.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has initiated emergency repair work, describing the effort as being undertaken on a 'war footing' due to the extent of the damage. The necessary interventions have led to either a complete or partial suspension of water supply across multiple areas within the D, E, and G South wards.
Residents in the affected zones are urged by civic officials to conserve water and use it prudently during this disruption. Specific areas including Lamington Road, Grant Road East, and Tardeo in D ward, along with Kamathipura and Agripada in E ward, and J.R. Boricha Marg in G South ward, are experiencing either a total outage or low-pressure supply. Teams are working diligently to expedite repairs and restore normal service, although a definitive timeline for full restoration has not yet been provided.
