Mumbai Nightmare: Falling Trees Kill Teen, Injure Friend
17 May
Summary
- Two trees fell on an autorickshaw, tragically killing a teenager.
- Construction debris allegedly made the trees unstable.
- Developer faces charges for negligent acts endangering life.

Tragedy struck on a recent Mother's Day evening in Mumbai when two trees collapsed onto a moving autorickshaw, resulting in the death of 15-year-old Aarika Shrivastava. Aarika, who had aspirations of becoming an engineer and working at NASA, succumbed to severe head injuries at P. D. Hinduja Hospital on May 17, 2026. Her sister, Manasvi, a first-year MBBS student, escaped with minor injuries, while their friend Harshita Kumar, 21, remains in critical condition with severe head trauma.
Investigations by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) suggest that debris dumped around the trees' base during construction activity by Bluestone Properties Pvt Ltd may have caused them to become unstable. The BMC's horticulture department has requested strict action against the developer for alleged violations of tree protection laws. Police have booked the developer under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to negligent acts endangering human life.
The H-West ward officials stated that the developers had not granted access for site inspections. The Slum Rehabilitation Authority has issued a stop-work notice, halting all construction activities at the project site. Families of the victims are bearing substantial medical costs, with Harshita's family having already spent approximately ₹15 lakh and Aarika's family exceeding ₹9 lakh.
Bluestone Properties Pvt Ltd expressed grief and is cooperating with authorities, stating that preliminary findings suggest internal decay and termite infestation in the trees, which were not externally visible. The company maintains that the project adhered to all safety protocols and statutory norms.
