Summary
- A steel rebar fell from a construction site, injuring a photographer.
- The incident highlights concerns over accountability in Mumbai's infrastructure projects.
- Authorities have issued a show-cause notice to the contractor and consultant.

A recent accident at a Mumbai construction site has intensified concerns about public safety and accountability in the city's infrastructure development. A 45-foot fall of a steel rebar injured Ganesh Budhale, a commercial photographer, near Pillar No 44 of the Sewri-Worli Elevated Connector project. This incident follows a fatal accident at a Metro 4 site where a parapet wall collapsed.
The Bhoiwada police have registered a case against the in-charge site engineer of J Kumar Infraprojects, the contractor for the Sewri-Worli Elevated Connector, under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for endangering life. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has issued show-cause notices to the project management consultant, M/s STUP, and the contractor.
The MMRDA acknowledged the incident, stating the rebar bounced off a barricade before hitting the passerby and confirmed they would cover all treatment expenses. They have also initiated a review of site safety practices. However, for the injured photographer, these assurances offer little solace amidst fears about public safety during extensive urban construction.
