11 Jan
Summary
- A man was fatally struck by a speeding dumper while crossing a busy Mulund street.
- The dumper driver was arrested after fleeing but later released on bail.
- An MLA holds a deputy chief engineer responsible, citing previous dumper accidents.

A speeding dumper tragically killed 37-year-old Suresh Rajput in Mulund (West) on Saturday afternoon as he attempted to cross a busy street. The driver, Brijesh Yadav, initially fled but was apprehended by authorities. He faces charges for causing death by negligence and rash driving under new penal code sections, though he was released on bail due to the bailable nature of the offense. The victim had recently met his elder brother before leaving in search of work.
Politically, the incident has fueled demands for action. BJP MLA Mihir Kotecha has implicated BMC deputy chief engineer Navnath Gadge, asserting his responsibility for repeated dumper-related accidents in the area. Kotecha pointed to previous fatalities and overturned dumpers, emphasizing that official directives to control dumper movement and develop alternative routes have been ignored.
Kotecha further criticized the continued passage of 300 to 400 overloaded dumpers daily through densely populated residential areas of Mulund Colony. He stressed that authorities had previously directed that dumper movement should be restricted through this stretch, and work on an alternative road should commence, yet these directives appear to have been disregarded, escalating risks for residents.
