15 Oct
Summary
- Two hikers were rescued after being lost for 36 hours on Mt. Shasta.
- They were found in freezing temperatures without adequate clothing or supplies.
- The rescue occurred on the Avalanche Gulch route, a dangerous area this time of year.

Two hikers, a 19-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman from Salt Lake City, were rescued on Mt. Shasta after being lost for approximately 36 hours. The pair became stranded in the Avalanche Gulch area on October 12, 2026, facing temperatures as low as 14-16 degrees Fahrenheit without adequate clothing or provisions.
Their distress call was placed just before their cell phones lost power. Search and Rescue, alongside a California Highway Patrol helicopter, initiated a search. After an extensive ground and air operation, the hikers were located in Cascade Gulch, around 1,000 feet from the McBride Springs Trail.
Neither hiker sustained injuries, and they were able to exit the gulch. This rescue is the third on the Avalanche Gulch route in the past month, prompting authorities to reiterate warnings about winter weather and the risks associated with this particular trail. Hikers are urged to research routes and prepare for adverse conditions.
