A harrowing incident occurred on Sunday, June 28, when Mary Evelyn Manning-Kellione, 39, of White Pine, Tennessee, died while attempting to rescue her son from rapidly rising floodwaters. The mother reportedly jumped into a culvert near Round Barn Road in Powder Springs to save the child, but she was subsequently swept away by the powerful current.
Emergency services, including multiple volunteer fire and rescue squads, were dispatched to the scene. The young son was able to surface at the other end of the culvert and reached safety on his own. Rescue personnel later located Manning-Kellione lodged within the culvert.
