Loved ones are urgently seeking assistance from local authorities in Peru for the search of missing Australian trekker Jordan Yap. Yap, a 30-year-old from Melbourne, began a planned 10-day solo trek on September 14 in the challenging Huayhuash mountain range, located approximately 400km northeast of Lima. He was last observed near the commencement of the Cordillera Huayhuash circuit, a high-altitude route through the Andes.
Considered a very experienced hiker, Yap failed to make contact on his scheduled return date of September 23. His luggage remains at the Krusty Hostel in Huaraz, and he missed a subsequent flight from Lima to Cusco. Friends emphasize that this lack of communication is entirely out of character, especially given the popularity of the trek, where encounters with other hikers are common.
Further concern has arisen as Yap misplaced his satellite beacon days before commencing the 120km hike. His family has engaged the local mountain rescue organization, Socorro Andino Peruano, which has a successful track record, including a recent rescue on the same trail. Time is critical in locating Yap, as his last known contact was nearly two weeks ago.
Despite extensive search operations by private crews and local rescue teams, no trace of Yap has been found. He was last seen wearing a white jacket, green sunshade sweater, and grey pants, and was believed to be carrying a 40-litre hiking bag, a Durston dome tent, and hiking poles. His family is appealing to the Australian government to collaborate with Peruvian officials to mobilize additional resources for the search in this rugged terrain.
