Two powerful earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude, struck northern Venezuela just 40 seconds apart on June 24. These shallow tremors caused widespread destruction, leveling buildings across the Caribbean coast, with La Guaira being one of the most severely affected cities.
Amidst the widespread devastation, a moment of profound hope emerged as a woman gave birth to a baby boy next to a collapsed building in La Guaira. Doctors reported that both mother and child were in good health after being transferred to a medical facility.
Further adding to the rare instances of survival, an 18-day-old infant was rescued alive from the ruins of an apartment building in Playa Grande, La Guaira, after being trapped for 32 hours. The infant's mother was rescued shortly after. These newborns have been hailed as symbols of hope in the face of immense tragedy.
The earthquakes destroyed hundreds of buildings and damaged key infrastructure, including Venezuela's main international airport. The UN estimates that up to 6.76 million people may have been affected by the disaster. Search-and-rescue operations are ongoing as crews work to find survivors in the affected regions.
