Summary
- At least 17 migrants perished after their boat drifted for eight days.
- Seven survivors were rescued off the coast of Tobruk, Libya.
- Libya serves as a dangerous transit route for migrants fleeing conflict and poverty.

At least seventeen migrants have died, with nine others missing, after their vessel broke down and drifted for eight days in the Mediterranean Sea. Seven survivors were rescued during recovery operations off Tobruk, a city in eastern Libya near the Egyptian border. Volunteers from the Red Crescent, in collaboration with naval forces and coast guards, conducted the rescue mission.
Libya is a critical transit country for migrants, many from sub-Saharan Africa, who undertake dangerous journeys across deserts and seas to reach Europe. They seek to escape conflict and poverty, but often face perilous conditions. Authorities expect the bodies of the nine missing migrants to wash ashore soon.
Separately, Libyan authorities have been pursuing human trafficking operations. Recently, a criminal gang was sentenced to up to 22 years in jail for human trafficking, abduction, and torture. In another case, a gang allegedly sent migrants from Tobruk on a dilapidated boat that capsized, leading to the deaths of 38 individuals from Sudan, Egypt, and Ethiopia.
