Gas Leak Sparks Evacuation in Middleboro Plaza
26 Feb
Summary
- A gas leak likely caused by a snowplow led to a plaza evacuation.
- Gas levels in one store reached explosive range before being shut off.
- Fire chief emphasizes vigilance with natural gas after severe weather.

A shopping plaza in Middleboro, Massachusetts, experienced a safe evacuation on Wednesday afternoon following a substantial natural gas leak. The incident, which occurred shortly after noon, was likely initiated by a snowplow dislodging a gas meter. Fire crews responded to reports of a strong gas odor at the Hannaford Supermarket parking lot on Merchant's Way.
Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed heavy natural gas odors within both the supermarket and Aubuchon Hardware. All stores in the strip mall were evacuated as a precaution. Crews successfully located and shut off the compromised gas line, effectively ventilating the affected buildings.
Middleboro Fire Chief Owen Thompson stated that gas levels in the hardware store were "well into the explosive range." He commended the rapid response of his crews in averting a more serious incident. No injuries were reported, and the scene was cleared by approximately 1:30 p.m.
Chief Thompson emphasized the ongoing need for residents to be aware of potential natural gas dangers, particularly after severe weather events. He urged anyone who smells gas to immediately call 911 for professional assessment, reinforcing the importance of safety over assumption.
