On October 10, 2025, a powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck offshore in the southern Philippines. The quake, which occurred at a depth of 10 km, was centered in waters off Manay town in the Davao Oriental region of Mindanao.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) immediately issued tsunami warnings for several countries in the region, including Indonesia. Coastal residents were urged to evacuate to higher ground or move further inland, as waves up to 1 meter above normal tide levels were expected.
The U.S. Tsunami Warning System also issued a tsunami threat, stating that hazardous waves were possible within 300 km of the earthquake's epicenter. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said waves of 1 to 3 meters above tide level were possible in the Philippines, and up to 1 meter in parts of Indonesia and Palau.

Phivolcs warned of potential damage and aftershocks from the strong offshore quake. The governor of Davao Oriental province reported that some buildings were damaged, and that people had panicked when the earthquake struck. Local authorities in the affected region were working to assess the situation and coordinate response efforts.
This powerful quake comes just two weeks after the Philippines experienced its deadliest earthquake in more than a decade, a magnitude 6.9 offshore tremor that killed 72 people on the island of Cebu. The Philippines is located along the Pacific "Ring of Fire" and experiences hundreds of earthquakes each year.
