Mass. Braces for Snow: Roads Cleared, Travel Advisories

Massachusetts officials are strongly advising residents to avoid travel as a major snowstorm is forecast to hit the region this Sunday. Governor Maura Healey has taken proactive measures by activating the state's emergency operations center and designating Monday as a "work from home day" to minimize road congestion and ensure public safety.

Residents are encouraged to stay indoors and prepare for the extreme weather. Precautions are advised for heating methods like fireplaces and candles to prevent fires. Additionally, drivers are warned to maintain distance from snowplows to ensure their safety and efficient operation.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) will operate on a modified weekend schedule. Several lines, including the Blue Line and trolleys to Mattapan, will see bus or ferry substitutions due to the weather. Commuter Rail services will follow a storm schedule to mitigate potential disruptions from failing switches.

Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver announced that approximately 3,000 pieces of equipment will be deployed for snow clearing. It is anticipated that a full cleanup could take up to four hours after the storm concludes. A truck ban will be in effect, with exemptions for vehicles carrying essential supplies like fuel, food, and medical goods.
