10 Jul
Summary
- A man lost his hand to an explosive device detonation.
- The incident occurred while cleaning Fourth of July fireworks debris.
- The victim suffered vision and hearing loss from the blast.

A man suffered a devastating injury when an explosive device detonated on a Northern California beach, leading to the amputation of his hand. Jason Turner was walking along Point St. George Beach on Sunday with his girlfriend, Pamala, intending to clear trash from Fourth of July fireworks. He picked up a device that resembled a bomb, which then exploded.
Pamala immediately applied a tourniquet to control the bleeding before emergency responders arrived. Deputies found Turner with a severe hand injury. Subsequent medical updates revealed he also sustained vision loss due to metal fragments in his eyes and has lost hearing in his right ear. Turner is the sole provider for his family of seven, and his injuries may be permanent.
The Del Norte County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident and has issued a warning: do not touch suspected explosive devices; instead, move to a safe distance and contact law enforcement. As of Friday afternoon, nearly $100,000 has been raised through a GoFundMe to support Turner's ongoing medical expenses.
