20 Jan
Summary
- Elderly man found dead in elevator shaft after ten days.
- Lift continued to operate over the body for days.
- Residents allege criminal negligence by builder and society.

A horrific incident unfolded in Bhopal's Chinar Dream City, where a 77-year-old man, Pritam Giri Goswami, was found dead in an elevator shaft nearly ten days after he went missing. The body was discovered on January 16, ten days after he was last seen leaving his apartment on January 6. A strong foul odor emanating from the building prompted residents and management to investigate, leading to the grim discovery.
Residents allege that the elevator car continued to move above the man's body for eight to ten days. This tragedy has led to accusations of criminal negligence against the builder and society management, with locals reporting that the lift had been faulty for months and its doors would often open even when the car was not present. The shaft door outside Mr. Goswami's flat was reportedly open, creating a fatal hazard.
The victim's son reported him missing on January 7, and while CCTV showed him within the colony, his exact whereabouts remained unknown. He expressed distress that if authorities had inspected the lift earlier, his father might not have suffered such a fate. Police have registered a case and are awaiting the post-mortem report to determine further legal action against those responsible for lift maintenance.
