Tragically, a man in his 20s has lost his life after a van plunged over a cliff in the Marsden area of South Shields. Northumbria Police received a report concerning a welfare check at 6:00 AM on Wednesday, May 13, 2026. It was reported that a van had veered off the A183 Coast Road and fallen onto the beach below, with a single occupant believed to be inside.
Emergency services, including North East Ambulance Service, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, HM Coastguard, and Tynemouth RNLI, were dispatched to the scene. Following an extensive search effort involving multiple partner agencies, the body of the man was discovered. His next of kin have been notified. The vehicle is currently being recovered from the site.
