A Spanish tourist is in critical condition following a horrific shark attack during his honeymoon in the Maldives. The man, identified as Borja from Alicante, suffered such severe blood loss that his leg had to be amputated. He is currently in intensive care.
The incident reportedly took place on Monday afternoon near Kooddoo island, within the Gaafu Alif Atoll. This location is known for a high concentration of sharks, especially near a local fish processing plant. Reports suggest the sharks may have been in a heightened state of hunger, potentially provoked by the group entering the water.
The victim was initially treated at Ga. Atoll Hospital before being airlifted to the capital, Male. His wife, Ana, whose family is from Castellon, Spain, has filed a negligence complaint against the tour operator. Relatives have flown to the Maldives to support her.
This is not the first shark-related incident in the Maldives; a Chinese tourist was injured last year while interacting with sharks, and a Russian tourist also reported an attack while snorkeling in April of the previous year.
