Madurai Braces for Heavy Rain: Evacuation Plans Underway
25 Oct
Summary
- Residents in flood-prone areas face potential evacuation if water levels rise.
- Temporary shelters and dewatering equipment are on standby for emergencies.
- Madurai was under a red alert, now revised to an orange alert for heavy rain.
Madurai is increasing flood preparedness as heavy rains are forecast. Authorities are identifying 27 vulnerable locations and are ready to evacuate residents from flood-prone areas if water levels rise. Temporary shelters, including schools and halls, are being readied, with provisions for food, water, sanitation, and medical care for displaced families.
The district was initially under a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall on Sunday, which has since been downgraded to an orange alert by the Regional Meteorological Centre, warning of heavy to very heavy rain on Monday. This intensified preparation follows recent downpours that flooded hundreds of houses and roads.
Officials are deploying high-capacity pumps and stocking sandbags to reinforce riverbanks and tank bunds. Emergency equipment like earthmovers and water-suction vehicles are positioned. Inspections of critical areas, including the Vaigai-Yanaikkal causeway and Sellur Pandalkudi channel, are underway to address debris and prevent canal water from entering residential zones.
The water resources department is closely monitoring dam levels, and a 24/7 control room has been activated at the collectorate. Residents can report emergencies via the toll-free number 1077.
