Historic Snowfall Triggers Travel Ban
24 Feb
Summary
- Travel ban issued for three southeastern Massachusetts counties.
- Over two feet of snow reported in parts of the state.
- Nonessential vehicles prohibited on roads due to dangerous conditions.

Governor Maura Healey has enacted a travel ban across three southeastern Massachusetts counties due to a historic blizzard. The order, issued on Monday afternoon, prohibits nonessential motor vehicle travel in Bristol, Plymouth, and Barnstable counties until the storm concludes and road conditions improve.
This severe weather event has already dumped over two feet of snow in some areas, making travel perilous. Governor Healey cited numerous reports of stuck and abandoned vehicles, hindering the efforts of tow trucks and emergency services. Travel on the Mass Pike has been restricted to 40 mph for safety.
While the ban specifically targets the South Coast, the governor urged all residents statewide to remain off the roads. Exceptions to the ban include public safety, healthcare personnel, news media, and those supporting essential human services agencies. State highway officials are mobilizing additional resources to the affected South Coast region.
