Active Landslip Forces Lyme Regis Beach Closure
6 Jan
Summary
- Monmouth Beach in Lyme Regis closed due to active landslip.
- Large boulders are falling from the cliff onto the beach.
- Public warned to stay well clear of affected cliffs and beach.

Monmouth Beach in Lyme Regis, Dorset, experienced an active and ongoing landslip on January 5, 2026. Large boulders have been observed falling from the cliff top onto the beach and into the water, leading to the closure of the affected area. Coastguard officials are strongly advising the public to stay well clear for their safety.
The unstable nature of the Jurassic Coast cliffs means they can crumble without warning. Visitors are urged to respect the closures and signage in place. While this fresh fall is unlikely to contain fossils, the public is warned against attempting to climb the slip or walk near the base of the cliffs.
This incident follows a significant cliff collapse at West Bay, Dorset, on December 30, 2025, where approximately 500 tonnes of rock fell. That event occurred near members of the public, who were able to escape unharmed.
