Roads Crumble: 15th Cave-In Blamed on Illegal Sewer
11 Sep
Summary
- Fifteen road cave-ins have occurred this year, with the latest near Sagoo Chowk.
- An illegal sewer connection caused wastewater to erode soil beneath the road.
- Municipal officials repaired the damaged stretch within two hours.
The city's alarming toll of road cave-ins has reached 15 this year, with the most recent incident occurring near Sagoo Chowk in Krishna Nagar. Officials from the municipal corporation revealed that the road collapsed due to seepage from an illegal private sewer connection, which gradually eroded the soil beneath the surface.
According to MC Commissioner Ojasvi Alankar, the collapse happened over an old road-gully chamber. An unauthorized sewer pipe from a nearby property was connected to this defunct chamber. Continuous wastewater seepage into the surrounding earth washed away the subgrade soil, creating a cavity approximately 4-5 feet deep and wide.
Civic body teams successfully repaired the damaged stretch within two hours, stabilizing the cavity and restoring traffic flow. The illegal sewer connection was also plugged to halt further sewage seepage. Permanent repair will involve removing the old chamber and properly filling the area to prevent future collapses.
