Lahore's Open Manholes: A Deadly Oversight
3 Apr
Summary
- Uncovered manholes pose a persistent danger in Lahore, causing accidents and deaths.
- Residents face contaminated water supply, leading to infections and costly solutions.
- Wasa admits issues, plans third-party validation for field operations reports.

Lahore's infrastructure issues are starkly highlighted by the continued presence of open manholes across the city, despite numerous accidents and fatalities. Residents report ignored pleas to authorities, with many fearing further harm. The situation is particularly concerning following a recent incident at the Bhaati Chowk remodeling project where a woman and her son died after falling into an uncovered sewer manhole.
Beyond the immediate danger of open manholes, which also contribute to traffic incidents, Lahore residents are suffering from a contaminated drinking water supply. This has led to an increase in oral and skin infections. Some individuals have resorted to costly alternatives, such as installing deep water pumps to access underground water, after their Wasa-supplied water proved unsafe.
Experts confirm the genuineness of these complaints, citing old and inadequate water distribution networks requiring urgent replacement. Punjab Wasa Director General Tayyab Farid has admitted to these systemic failures and revealed plans for a third-party validation mechanism. This measure aims to verify the accuracy of field operation reports, which are currently submitted as "All Ok reports" by Wasa officers, and to hold negligent officials accountable for the ongoing public safety and health concerns.
