LA Traffic Deaths Rise: E-Bikes, Distracted Driving Fuel Crisis
15 Jun
Summary
- Serious injury or death crashes increased 5% this year.
- E-bike and e-scooter collisions have surged significantly.
- Young riders often lack road knowledge, endangering pedestrians.

Serious traffic crashes causing injury or death have seen a 5% increase in Los Angeles so far this year, with a total of 750 incidents reported by the LAPD. This concerning trend is being driven by a combination of distracted driving and a significant rise in the use of e-bikes and e-scooters. These incidents are causing increased concern among law enforcement.
Collisions specifically involving e-bikes and cars have notably increased, with 54 such crashes occurring this year alone. Police are issuing warnings to pedestrians to remain vigilant, as many e-bike and e-scooter riders are illegally using sidewalks. Tragically, there has been an instance where an e-scooter struck and killed a pedestrian on a sidewalk.
Law enforcement also highlights that many younger riders of these devices lack essential knowledge of traffic laws and road safety. Captain Anthony Espinoza of the LAPD West Traffic Division noted that many younger riders do not possess driver's licenses or formal training, leading to violations such as running red lights and stop signs.
In response, the LAPD is increasing enforcement at intersections with the highest crash rates to curb dangerous behaviors and improve road safety for all users. Drivers are advised to anticipate heightened police presence in these areas.
