A devastating incident occurred in Kottayam on Friday evening when a private bus veered onto a pavement, resulting in the death of 19-year-old Anjali Ajay and serious injuries to five other women. The accident took place around 7 pm at market junction as the bus, traveling from Nagampadam towards Changanassery, mounted the pedestrian area.
Eyewitnesses reported that the bus was speeding, impacting both pedestrians and bus passengers. Emergency services, including locals and fire personnel, responded swiftly to extricate those trapped. Fortuitously, some individuals had sought shelter in a nearby shop veranda due to light rain, potentially averting a larger catastrophe.
Anjali Ajay, who was on a ventilator, passed away on Saturday during treatment at the Kottayam medical college hospital. The injured women are receiving care at various hospitals, including the medical college, Caritas Hospital, and the general hospital. Traffic was disrupted for approximately half an hour following the incident.
Authorities have taken the driver and conductor into custody. The motor vehicles department has initiated action, leading to the suspension of the driver's license and the bus's fitness certificate. Anjali, who lived with her aunt, worked near the accident site.
