A severe thunderstorm recently impacted Kenora, Ontario, creating conditions described as "frightening" by local business owner Rees Snow. While the immediate flooding has subsided, significant debris remains.
City officials reported a high volume of calls related to flooding, sewer backups, and downed trees. Crews are actively working on critical infrastructure repairs, including clearing blocked catch basins and removing debris. Motorists are advised to avoid standing water and obey all road closure signs.
The storm's intensity was felt across northwestern Ontario, with tornado warnings issued for Kenora, Sioux Narrows, and Dryden. Environment Canada reported significant rainfall, with 94 millimetres in Kenora and 56 millimetres in Ruthann Lake, along with nickel to loonie-sized hail. The Northern Tornadoes Project is investigating potential tornado touchdowns.
United Tree Service reported numerous calls for tree damage and washed-out roads, particularly on bypass routes. Several cottagers are experiencing blocked access due to downed trees, with crews expected to work for about a week in some areas to clear extensive damage.
