Heavy rains on Saturday, August 1, 2026, caused widespread disruption in the hilly regions of Kannur district. Roads were damaged, houses flooded, and several families had to be evacuated. In Ulikkal grama panchayat, eight families comprising 26 people were relocated to a relief camp after floodwaters entered their homes. The Fire and rescue services played a crucial role in these rescue operations.
Tragically, two people were reported missing in separate rain-related incidents. One was swept away in the Kunhirapuzha at Peravur, and another, a swimming instructor, was lost while attempting a rescue at Meenthulli. Search operations are currently ongoing for both individuals.
Significant infrastructure damage occurred, including the Boys Town-Palchuram road, disrupting traffic. The District Disaster Management Authority implemented a night traffic ban on this route due to landslide risks. Additionally, several bridges were submerged, and the Aralam Butterfly Sanctuary was inundated.
In response to the rising water levels and safety concerns, the Pazhassi dam shutters were raised. Tourist activities like rafting and kayaking were suspended, and entry to beaches was banned due to rough seas. District officials are actively monitoring the situation, ensuring emergency shelters are prepared and issuing necessary warnings to residents in vulnerable areas.
