According to the news report, a Jamaican family living in Spanish Town has suffered immense losses after the devastating impact of Hurricane Melissa. Lucius Leyvan, a food truck owner in Swindon, UK, was able to contact his family after a week and a half and was relieved to find them safe, but they remain without electricity or access to water.
Leyvan's mother told him that even getting basic necessities like bread has become extremely difficult, as the local shops have run out of essential supplies like flour and sugar. The hurricane, which made landfall on October 28th as a category five storm, has left the community in shambles, with many people still stranded on roofs and without power.
Leyvan plans to send food packages to his hometown to help his family and the broader community. He described the situation as "touching" and said his mother burst into tears while recounting their struggles. Despite the devastation, the community has already started rebuilding, though Leyvan acknowledges that the recovery process will be long and arduous.
