A sudden and severe storm swept through Jalpaiguri district on Wednesday afternoon, resulting in the tragic deaths of two residents. The victims, identified as Arjun Oraon, 40, and Ratna Roy, 50, were killed by lightning strikes during the inclement weather.
Arjun Oraon, a mahout, was patrolling Gorumara National Park when he dismounted and sought shelter under a tree. Tragically, he was struck by lightning at that spot and later declared dead upon arrival at Mangalbari Grameen Hospital.
In a separate incident in Gadong, Dhupguri, Ratna Roy was in her family's field ploughing with two cows when lightning struck her. The storm's ferocity also caused widespread damage, with trees uprooted and falling across National Highway 717, leading to a complete blockage and significant traffic disruption for several hours.
