Summary
- A 250-year-old Jain Trust building collapsed in Jaisalmer.
- Excavation for an unauthorized basement weakened the historic structure.
- Laborers escaped just before the building crumbled, averting tragedy.

A significant incident occurred in Jaisalmer on Tuesday when a 250-year-old historic building owned by the Jain Trust suddenly collapsed. This occurred after excavation work for an allegedly unauthorized basement was carried out at an adjacent construction site. More than ten laborers were present at the excavation site but managed to escape unharmed as they noticed debris falling and fled moments before the structure gave way.
The collapsed building, identified as a Jain Trust "Upasara" (religious residence), was located behind the famous Patwon Ki Haveli and had been rented out as a warehouse. The adjacent construction involved excavating a deep basement, which reportedly compromised the old structure's foundation, leading to its collapse. Despite prior notices from the Municipal Council and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to halt the construction, the work allegedly continued.
Authorities have cordoned off the area, instructed nearby families to relocate temporarily for safety, and restricted public movement. The ASI is initiating action against those responsible for the unauthorized construction. The Jain Trust has been served notices to safely dismantle the remaining unsafe portions and clear the rubble. The incident has sparked serious concerns regarding unauthorized construction activities near Jaisalmer's valuable heritage sites.
