Iowa Blizzard: Whiteout Conditions Spark Crashes
16 Mar
Summary
- Gusty winds and snowfall caused deteriorated road conditions across Iowa.
- Blizzard Warnings and High Wind Warnings were issued through Monday morning.
- Several multi-vehicle crashes and highway closures were reported on Sunday.

Iowa is currently facing hazardous winter weather conditions as gusty winds and snowfall have significantly degraded road conditions across the state. As of Sunday, March 16, 2026, temperatures dropped, and snow began to spread eastward, accompanied by strong winds. This has resulted in widespread whiteout and blizzard conditions, prompting the issuance of Blizzard Warnings and High Wind Warnings through Monday morning.
The Iowa Department of Transportation has taken measures to ensure public safety, closing multiple sections of major roadways. Notably, the Saylorville Lake Mile Long Bridge was shut down, and all lanes of I-35 north of Ames to the Minnesota state line were closed. The Iowa DOT's Road Conditions Map indicates 'Travel Not Advised' for much of northwestern Iowa, with significant portions of roads covered in snow. Several incidents, including spin-outs, property damage, and multiple multi-vehicle crashes, have occurred due to these conditions.
Significant traffic disruptions were reported on Sunday afternoon. A multi-vehicle crash blocked Interstate 80 at the 880 Interchange north of Minden. Shortly after, a semi-truck overturned on northbound I-35/80, causing further blockages. Another multi-vehicle crash occurred on eastbound I-80 near Adair. Emergency services have responded to these incidents, working to clear roadways and manage traffic flow. Residents are advised to stay weather-aware and check road conditions.
