Torrential monsoon rains have unleashed widespread destruction across India, resulting in over 10 confirmed deaths on Thursday due to rain-related incidents. The downpour has inundated roads, uprooted trees, and disrupted normal life in several parts of the country.
Fresh floods and landslides were reported in Arunachal Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh, with rising river waters submerging a 100-foot iron bridge in Kinnaur, cutting off access to a village. In Delhi, heavy rainfall led to significant waterlogging and traffic congestion, though it also brought the cleanest air since September 2023.
Maharashtra is witnessing rescue operations after a building collapse at a waste-to-energy plant near Pune, where a garbage mound gave way due to heavy rain. Several other states, including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab, have also reported heavy rainfall, with numerous incidents of damage and fatalities.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced that the southwest monsoon has now covered the entire country, with July so far witnessing a significant surplus in rainfall compared to the normal average.
