6 Mar
Summary
- Two individuals face charges for facilitating illegal hazardous material dumping.
- Flammable magnesium and aluminum drums exploded, causing a major fire.
- Water used to fight fire created hydrogen gas, leading to a second explosion.

A significant chemical explosion and subsequent fire occurred at the Gilton's Resource Recovery Facility in Modesto on March 27, 2025. This event was allegedly caused by the illegal dumping of hazardous materials. Prosecutors have charged Henry Meeks and Phillip Whitmore with facilitating this unlawful disposal.
Meeks, identified as the owner of Advanced Materials Manufacturing Technologies, LLC (AM2T), and Whitmore, a manager at the same company, are accused of arranging the dumping of 55-gallon drums. These drums contained highly flammable powdered magnesium and aluminum and originated from the AM2T facility in Riverbank.
Employees at the Gilton facility were reportedly unaware of the dangerous contents within the drums when they exploded. The situation escalated when firefighters attempted to combat the blaze with water, which reacted with the chemicals to produce flammable hydrogen gas, triggering a second explosion.
Firefighters ultimately contained the incident by using heavy equipment to cover the flames with dirt. Whitmore has been apprehended, while an arrest warrant has been issued for Meeks. They face charges including illegal storage, transportation, and disposal of hazardous waste.
