A tragic accident at Bhavani Apartments in Hyderabad resulted in the death of a 57-year-old woman and injuries to her 15-month-old grandson on Friday. The victims, K Radha and her grandson, fell into the lift shaft from the fifth floor.
Radha, who was around 70% visually impaired and undergoing dialysis, had gone to the terrace with her grandchildren. While returning, she apparently stepped into the shaft, believing the lift had arrived. The child was with her when they fell.
Residents heard a loud noise and discovered the child, who was rescued and taken to a hospital. Radha was found trapped between lift cables and the shaft wall, sustaining severe head and leg injuries. She was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.
Investigators suspect a malfunction allowed the landing door to open prematurely. A case of unnatural death has been registered. The toddler is expected to remain under observation for 48 hours.
