Hollywood cinematographer George Richmond, celebrated for his visual artistry in films like "Deadpool & Wolverine," is on the road to recovery following a life-saving spinal surgery. The 54-year-old was critically injured after a 25-foot fall during a paragliding expedition in Himachal Pradesh, which resulted in quadriplegia.
Richmond's accident occurred on June 9 in the Kullu district's Deo Tibba region. While on a cross-country paragliding trip, he experienced a difficult takeoff at 4,000 meters, leading to the fall. An urgent rescue operation, involving the Indian Air Force and the British Embassy, successfully evacuated him.
He was airlifted to PGI Chandigarh, where doctors found his fifth and sixth cervical vertebrae severely misaligned, crushing his spinal cord. A multidisciplinary team, led by orthopedic spine surgeon Dr. Vishal Kumar, performed an intricate surgery, permanently anchoring the neck with a titanium plate and screws.
The medical team is providing round-the-clock monitoring and has plans for physical therapy to aid nerve pathway recovery. Doctors are confident that Richmond will regain mobility within days, thanks to the world-class care he is receiving.
