A historic 85-year-old bridge in Weston-super-Mare, crucial to the town's World War Two efforts, was demolished over Christmas. Winterstoke Road Bridge, a key transport link used by approximately 20,000 vehicles daily, closed in November due to its age.
The demolition, carefully timed to avoid train disruption, has paved the way for a new structure. This replacement is designed to serve the community for the next 120 years, ensuring continued access on Winterstoke Road. Piling and foundation works are set to commence soon.
An £11m replacement bridge is anticipated to open in spring 2027. The original bridge, constructed in 1941, provided vital access to an RAF aeroplane production factory. A temporary footbridge remains open during the new bridge's construction.
