Severe thunderstorms swept through Himachal Pradesh early Monday, leaving a trail of destruction. Homes, schools, and cowsheds had their roofs torn off, while vehicles sustained damage. Uprooted trees blocked roads and disrupted power transmission lines in several districts.
Tragically, dozens of cattle perished due to lightning strikes in the Sundernagar area. In Kangra district, a lineman lost his life while repairing an electricity fault when power was unexpectedly restored. The power infrastructure in Una district also suffered significant damage.
The weather office has issued an orange alert for thunderstorms, lightning, and hailstorms in Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, and Sirmaur districts for May 12th. A yellow alert is in place for other areas. Light to moderate rainfall was recorded across the state in the preceding 24 hours.
Authorities are working to restore power and clear roads. The wet spell is expected to continue across Himachal Pradesh until May 15th, with forecasts indicating potential rain and snowfall in higher elevations and rain in the plains.
