Hiker Rescued After Fire Ant Reaction on Trail

Emergency services responded Tuesday morning to assist a hiker on the West Fork of the Cold Springs Trail. The individual had reportedly experienced an allergic reaction after contact with fire ants. Rescuers utilized a Santa Barbara County helicopter to locate and retrieve the hiker.
A rescuer was lowered from the helicopter to hoist the person to safety. The hiker was subsequently flown to a local hospital for medical treatment. The current condition of the hiker remains unclear.
Experts note that fire ant bites, while typically causing localized pain and swelling, can, in rare instances, trigger severe anaphylactic responses. Such reactions can potentially be life-threatening.
