A hiker on Mount Etna, Europe's largest active volcano, has died after being struck by lightning. The 29-year-old American man was discovered in serious condition on Sunday in the Valle del Bove, an area that had been recently closed to the public due to unusual volcanic activity. Emergency services airlifted him to Cannizzaro Hospital in Catania, but he arrived in cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead shortly after.
In addition to the lightning incident, Mount Etna has been experiencing significant volcanic activity. A new vent opened in the Valle del Bove, causing fresh lava flows. This seismic activity has also prompted Catania's international airport to impose flight limitations due to heavy ash emissions into the atmosphere. The airport has faced over 10 days of cancellations and delays related to the volcano's eruptions.
