A hiker succumbed to injuries on Sunday following a fall on Brunswick Mountain, one of Metro Vancouver's tallest peaks. The incident occurred near Lions Bay, B.C., on Saturday when a woman in a group of fourteen hikers slipped and fell approximately 20 metres.
Tragically, a male companion attempted to descend and assist her but also fell, sliding an estimated 100 to 150 metres down the steep, snow-covered terrain. He came to rest just above a waterfall, in critical condition.
Lions Bay Search and Rescue, supported by North Shore Rescue, launched a complex operation Saturday afternoon. Nineteen volunteers, utilizing rope systems and two helicopters, managed to extract both the injured man and the woman, who was stable. The man was pronounced deceased in hospital the following day.
Rescue managers noted the challenging backcountry conditions in the region, emphasizing saturated snowpack after recent heavy rainfall. The B.C. Coroners Service is continuing its investigation into the fatal fall.
