HGVs Block Country Lane After M6 Diversion
19 Feb
Summary
- Lorries used narrow lane due to M6 accident, causing damage.
- Sat navs misdirecting HGVs onto unsuitable roads is an ongoing issue.
- Residents report repeated incidents and significant mess from lorries.

Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) have caused significant damage to a narrow country lane near Forton services in Lancaster. The drivers ignored road signs indicating the lane was unsuitable, using it as a shortcut during an M6 closure. This led to three HGVs becoming stuck in the early hours of Monday, with one requiring towing. The incident resulted in damage to verges, hedgerows, and trees.
Local residents have expressed frustration over the recurring issue, which they report happens approximately four times a year. Jayne Brearley, a resident, stated that kerb stones protecting her property were strewn across the road. Lancaster and Wyre MP Cat Smith has highlighted that sat nav systems persistently misdirect lorry drivers onto such inappropriate routes, a problem she has addressed since becoming MP.
Lancashire County Council has been approached for comment regarding the ongoing problem. MP Maya Ellis has established a taskforce to address M6 congestion and related issues, prompted by constituent concerns about gridlock caused by accidents and road closures in the Preston and Lancaster areas.
