Teacher Dies After Heroic Beach Rescue

A heroic act of bravery turned tragic when Derrick Moore, a DeKalb County elementary school teacher, lost his life after saving a young girl from a rip current at a South Carolina beach on Friday evening. Witnesses described Moore, 47, of Loganville, as acting without hesitation as he entered the water to rescue the child who was caught in the strong current.
Moore successfully pushed the girl towards a rescuer who was able to bring her safely to shore. Tragically, Moore then collapsed and did not resurface. His body was recovered the following morning by the Horry County Coroner's Office. The Myrtle Beach Police Department is currently investigating the incident.
Moore was remembered as a dedicated educator at Rockbridge Elementary School and a devoted father of four. Counselors were made available at his schools to support students and staff grappling with the loss of their "Coach."
