In June 2026, Mihriban Matrozi, a 30-year-old cultural and tourism official from Qira county, Hotan prefecture, Xinjiang, lost her life during a mountain flash flood while on duty.
Matrozi was stationed in Yulongke'er and Segezileke villages when torrential rains struck on June 21, 2026. She worked through the night, organizing emergency supplies and successfully relocating 125 residents to safety.
The following day, with roads to scenic areas damaged by floods, Matrozi set out to inspect the situation for tourist safety. Tragically, she was caught in a flash flood herself and perished.
Her story gained wider recognition recently when the Xinjiang regional office for cultural and ethical progress nominated her for the 2026 'Good Samaritans of China' award. This campaign honors individuals for bravery, honesty, dedication, and filial piety.
Matrozi had a distinguished career at the grassroots level since returning to her hometown in 2013. She began as a kindergarten teacher and later became vice-principal of a vocational school, where she supported hearing-impaired students and those in financial need. In December 2025, she transitioned to cultural and tourism promotion, spearheading numerous projects that highlighted Qira's heritage and local products.
