The death toll following a devastating fire at an illegal bed-and-breakfast in Hauz Rani has reached 23. The latest fatality was a Bangladeshi woman in her 40s, who passed away on Wednesday due to severe burn injuries sustained in the June 3 blaze.
This incident, which occurred around 8:30 am, saw 49 guests rescued from the facility. Of those evacuated, 21 were initially pronounced dead, with additional victims succumbing later. The tragedy has tragically claimed the lives of 14 foreign nationals and nine Indian citizens.
At least 28 other individuals were injured, requiring intensive medical care. The investigation into the fire's origin is ongoing. Police reconstructed the incident with the arrested head chef, who reportedly stated the fire started in the ground-floor kitchen, though his defense suggests an electrical short circuit.
The building owner, Lovekesh Bajaj, and manager, Jay Mishra, have been arrested. Investigators are also seeking at least five other staff members who allegedly fled the scene.
