Deadly Virus Strikes Expedition Cruise Ship
7 May
Summary
- Three passengers confirmed dead from hantavirus outbreak.
- Ship en route to Spain's Canary Islands for arrival.
- Operator claims no symptomatic individuals remain onboard.

A hantavirus outbreak has caused the deaths of three passengers aboard the MV Hondius expedition cruise ship, with several others exhibiting symptoms. The World Health Organization confirmed the outbreak is linked to a rare strain that can spread between humans. The ship, which began its voyage in Argentina in early April, is now heading to Spain's Canary Islands and is expected to arrive on Sunday, May 10.
Three passengers previously awaiting medical transfer have been removed from the ship for specialist hospital care. The ship's operator, Oceanwide Expeditions, stated that no symptomatic individuals are currently on board. An Irish passenger described the situation as shocking, particularly after the first deaths occurred, initially without clear understanding of the cause.
Reports indicate that the ship's captain initially informed passengers that the first death was due to "natural causes" and that the deceased was not infectious. However, concerns have been raised about the adequacy of precautions taken in the early stages of the outbreak.
