Teacher's Hair Bleach Nightmare: Skin Graft & 6 Surgeries

A botched hair bleaching appointment on January 17, 2022, left Natasha Holgate, a primary school teacher, with crippling scalp burns. What began as a routine visit to Bow Hairdressing in Snodland, where she had been a client since childhood, escalated dramatically when the stylist applied a hairdryer to foils to speed up the process. Holgate experienced intense burning pain, prompting her to alert the stylist, who reportedly found the foils too hot to touch.

Despite Holgate's pleas that her head was burning, the stylist allegedly delayed removing the foils, fearing a green discoloration of her hair. The subsequent washing of her hair was excruciatingly painful. Advised to go home, Holgate left with severely damaged hair and sought medical attention the following day. This led to an emergency skin graft surgery and subsequently six reconstructive surgeries due to the severity of the burns, which were a mix of chemical and heat damage.

The ordeal caused by the salon's negligence resulted in a significant bald patch on Holgate's head and required her to wear a full head bandage for weeks. She took six months off work and underwent therapy, experiencing substantial mental, financial, and relational strain. After a three-and-a-half-year wait, Holgate received a £50,000 out-of-court settlement, emphasizing that no amount of money could compensate for her suffering, and urging greater awareness and care from hair professionals.
